Interview with Toby Hoogs of Toby Hoogs Photography

  Part I

How long have you been photographing weddings?

After picking up my father’s professional cameras at age twelve, I began seeing the world through the lens.  As a teenager I began photographing models and surfing.  In 1992 I moved to New York City at age eighteen to study in the hub of professional photography.  Upon my return to the Hawaiian Islands I started my business and focused in on destination weddings.  I was fortunate to quickly develop clients and referrals and I have now been documenting weddings for 16 years.

How many events do you photograph a year?

We try to target about 50 weddings a year.  Our goal is to provide excellent service in quality.
How would you describe your style?

My style is easy going, creative, and fun.  I have an eye for details, and an in the moment personality.

Do you have a favorite Venue?

The Kohala Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii is our favorite venue because it is nestled on the leeward side of the island.  It’s a sunny stretch of blue ocean, lava fields, and incredible beaches.  There are many world class resorts with breathtaking wedding locations.  The people on the Big Island are warm hearted and the flowers, food, and services reflect this aloha spirit.

Describe your dream wedding from a photographers point of view.

The elements necessary are great light, amazing venues, and true emotions.  Some of my favorite images have been created at the smallest most intimate events.

What do you love most about being a wedding photographer?

Given the opportunity to document such a special event allows me to be extremely focused and in the moment. This creative process is very zen-like.  Every couple is unique and I like the challenge of capturing pictures that reflect their individual personalities.

What makes you stand out from the other Hawaii Wedding Photographers?

Being the 4th generation born in Hawaii, has allowed me to exemplify the attitude of friendly acceptance for which the Hawaiian islands are so famous for, commonly known as the “aloha spirit”.  My career travels around the globe and years of experience have taught me the vision and technique needed to document your event at its best.   I am equipped with two of the industries best 21 megapixel Canon Cameras and numerous lenses.  My devotion and drive will create timeless images that even your future generations will cherish.

What advise do you have for future brides?

My advice to future brides would be to hire local professionals, and communicate your vision.  Good schedule planning and attention to details are imperative.  On the day of the wedding just relax, and have fun!

Name three Elite Vendors that you highly recommend.

My Videographer, Todd Buczyna is incredible, Flower’s by Heide – Top Notch, and Reverend Dean Kauka.

How/why did you get involved in Wedding Photography?

I began my career shooting surfing and models.  At age 17 I was asked to shoot my first wedding.  I quickly realized that I loved being immersed in the emotionally driven aspect of wedding photography.

What Inspires You?

Cool lenses, fun personalities, and natural landscapes

Part II

Where do you want to be in 10 years?
Since we are located centrally around many different countries, we hope to combine our love of travel with international destination weddings.

Three things you are thankful for

My hardworking professional staff, the beauty and spirit of the Hawaiian Islands, and the advancement of digital photography.

Things your clients should know about you?

I’ve been told that I am calm and cool under pressure, I make people around me feel comfortable, and that I am nearly invisible, yet everywhere during events.

What else would you like our readers to know about you

At the end of the day it never ceases to amaze me the amount of energy that is put forth by so many people to create each wedding. Wedding photography is a very unique type of photography; it takes a certain mixture of personality, creativity, technical knowledge, and artistry.  After documenting over a thousand weddings, I have gained the experience and intuition to unobtrusively capture each moment as it unfolds.  Every event is photographed in its own unique way; we use color and black and white with a variety of lenses and techniques.

On the day of the wedding just relax, and have fun!" - Toby
